Born Ira Barnes Dutton, April 27, 1843 in Stowe, VT. Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Stowe is built on the farm land where he was born. He took the name Joseph when he converted at the age of 40 to Catholicism and joined the Trappist Monastery at Gethsemane in Kentucky. Joseph was a Civil War Veteran from Wisconsin. His wife of one year divorced him and he started drinking heavily and lived what he called a "degenerate decade". He decided to reform his life and started learning more about the Catholic Church which lead to his conversion. After 20 months with the Trappists, he moved to Hawaii to serve alongside this priest he read about, Fr. Damien. Brother Joseph served with both future saints, St. Damien and St. Marianne Cope. He served the leper community on Molokai for 35 years. He died March 26, 1931. His cause is with the Diocese of Honolulu. Read more in this article from the USCCB. Read more at josephdutton.org
